University of Florida
As
Florida’s Sea Grant and Land Grant University, the University
of Florida is uniquely positioned to provide expertise and resources
for dealing with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Florida Cooperative Extension Service at UF has extension agents
and specialists in every coastal county, already assisting coastal
communities in preparation for potential effects of oil on the state’s
beaches, wetlands, and other coastal ecosystems – and ready
to provide assistance to business owners and residents who are affected
by the oil spill. Florida Sea Grant, along with Sea Grant programs
in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas, is directly involved
with monitoring the spill and providing critical information other
agencies need in their efforts to contain it and limits its effects.
UF research expertise related to the impact of the spill on our state’s
economy and environment span the range from modeling of ocean currents
and fisheries science to estuarine ecology, water quality, tourism,
marine economics, toxicology and human health, and safety of seafood.
Other UF units directly involved with the effort include:
