Florida International UniversityFlorida International University brings expertise in a number of key areas to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Focus areas include marine chemistry and water quality, ecotoxicology, marine ecology, economic impacts, and energy policy. FIU is well-poised to monitor water quality and ecosystem dynamics in south Florida in response to the spill as well as the long-term impacts of the spill on marine organisms. Our existing long-term records of water quality and the status of the ecosystems of south Florida provide a wealth of data than can be used to assess the impacts the spill may have in south Florida. FIU also provides historical perspectives on previous spills in the Gulf of Mexico.
