Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University

Florida Agriculture and Mechanical UniversityFlorida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), is an 1890 land-grant and doctoral/research institution dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, resolution of complex issues and the empowerment of citizens and communities. FAMU can provide a wide breadth of expertise and capabilities, as well as access to key strategic partnerships related to efforts associated with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. FAMU is well prepared to assist with short and long term assessments of oil associated impacts affecting coastal ecosystems, water quality, public health, and coastal communities. FAMU can also assist with Florida Panhandle coastal hydrological modeling efforts. Over the past several years, through efforts associated with the FAMU led NOAA Environmental Cooperative Science Center (ECSC), FAMU faculty, researchers, and students, together with collaborators at partnering institutions, have been engaged in highly integrative research at two National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) sites on the Gulf of Mexico that may be impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill: the Grand Bay NERR (GBNERR) in Mississippi and the Apalachicola NERR (ANERR) in Florida. Focus areas of ECSC researchers working in these systems include high resolution hyperspectral remote sensing and ground truthing activities, integrated ecological, economic, social science and natural resource risk assessments, and basic assessments of ecosystem status and health. FAMU can also provide expertise on issues related to environmental equity and justice..
